Washington Park in Anacortes

Here is a great video Uploaded to YouTube by sanjibdutta on Apr 4, 2012
Beautiful views of Guemes Channel and Burrows Bay as seen from Washington Park and also the park’s famous leaning tree (one of Washington state’s most photographed tree) in the historic town of Anacortes on Fidalgo Island in Skagit County, Washington, USA during our trip on Sep. 3, 2011.

Washington Park is located on a peninsula at the western tip of Fidalgo Island. The 220-acre city park features camping, a boat launch, and day use picnic sites. The park juts into Rosario Strait on the western edge of Anacortes, offering territorial views. A scenic 2.3-mile one-way loop road winds through the park’s forested hills and meadows with views of the San Juan Islands and Olympic Mountains. The park offers sweeping views of Guemes Channel on one side and Burrows Bay on the other.

At Sunset Beach, on the north shore, there is a boat launch, restrooms, reservable picnic shelter, playground and open play area. There are 75 campsites, restrooms, showers and laundry services in the overnight area. Picnic sites and car pullouts provide beach access along Green Point, the west shoreline. The loop road is used by cars, joggers, bicyclists and walkers.

Anacortes is the gateway to the San Juan and Vancouver Islands. Downtown Anacortes has over 125 life-sized murals painted by local resident Bill Mitchell. He painted the murals over the last 25 years from historical photographs. His art is on display all over Downtown buildings with depictions of historic scenes. Pick up a free mural map at the Visitor Center located at 819 Commercial Avenue as it is a wonderful way to discover Anacortes.

Anacortes is located 18 miles west of Mount Vernon and about one hour drive from Bellingham to the north and Seattle to the south.

Driving directions to the park: From I-5 take Highway 20 West. Enter Anacortes on Spur 20 and take Commercial Avenue to 12th Street. Turn left on 12th and follow the signs (about 3 miles) to Washington Park.

Dean Piper Speaks About Your Chimney!

Every month we receive several calls from folks who are shopping for service for their gas or wood stoves and fireplaces. The truth is they are price shopping.
While it certainly makes great sense to save money whenever possible, choosing your medical specialist by how much they charge is probably not in the best interest of your long term health. So, think of the Chimney Sweep or Gas Service Technician as your doctor for your fireplace or stove. The more education and training we receive, the better we are to ensure the safety of your equipment and your home.
Becoming Chimney Safety Institute of America and National Fire Institute certified and maintaining those certifications requires classroom training, testing on a National level and continuing education. It allows us to belong to organizations that ensure we are kept up to date with all current code and safety regulations both at the National and State levels. We adhere to standards of what must be included in each level of inspection and parameters for what level of inspection must be completed in each situation.
A proper cleaning and inspection is a lot more than pushing a brush (hopefully one that is the proper shape and size for your chimney) up and down the chimney. The Certified Sweep will clean and inspect the fireplace or stove and venting system inside and out to ensure it is mechanically sound and safe to operate. They will discuss all findings with the homeowner and leave a written report, which will delineate any further inspection or work that must be completed immediately or in the future. They provide consumer education on proper burning and home maintenance. For the Certified Sweep, this is more than a job; it is his or her PROFESSION.

New Residential Efficiency Program

On February 22, from 2:30 to 5:00 pm, Skagit County’s Sustainability Office will host an open house to kickoff the Skagit County Community Energy Challenge (“SCEC”).  This  program was designed to encourage and facilitate residential energy efficiency.

This program will help homeowners achieve energy efficiency, water conservation, waste reduction,  and creation of wildlife habitat.

The program will provide a home energy assessment and report which will show homeowners opportunities on how to lower their home bills through insulation, air sealing, and other measures.  The assessment, normally valued at $500-$600, will only cost the homeowner $95, and is the only cost for this program.   The remainder of the cost is being funded by a grant to Skagit County from the U.S. Department of Energy through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The SCEC provides valuable information to homeowners on how to make their home more sustainable (including rebate and incentive programs), and the necessary steps to make these recommended improvements.

The open house will be held in the lobby of the Skagit County Commissioners Administrative Building located at 1800 Continental Place in Mount Vernon.  Those interested in attending the program can email or call (360) 419-7607.

Why it Pays to Price Your Home Right

A few important tips on pricing your home in today’s real estate market!

1. Faster sale

When your home sells faster, you save taxes, insurance costs, mortgage payments, maintenance costs and other ownership costs.

2. Less inconvenience

Showing your home takes a lot of time and work. You have to prepare for showings, keep your home spit-shined, arrangements to have pets and children out of the home during showings…… Proper pricing reduces this.

3. Exposure to buyers in your price range

At market value, you open your home up to more buyers who can afford the price.

4. Increased salesperson response

Buyers and real estate brokers are excited about a home that is priced right, and real estate brokers make special efforts to contact all their potential buyers since they know homes that are priced right sell faster.

5. Better response from advertising and sign calls

Ad calls and sign calls turn into showings when price is not a deterrent. Your home looks good vs. competition.

6. Attracts higher offers

When a home is priced right, buyers are less likely to offer low out of fear of losing a good home.

7. Means MORE money to sellers

If a home is priced right, the excitement of the market produces higher sale prices. You NET more, both in terms of actual sale price and in less carrying costs

If you are considering selling your home, it is important to contact a full time professional real estate agent to assist you with the home selling process. It involves much more than just filling out some forms. I would be happy to help you with your real estate needs! You can email me at or call (360) 941-3734.
