Saturday June 4th – Kids Fishing Derby
Open to children 13 years of age and younger, the Kids Fishing Derby will be taking place at Heart Lake in Anacortes, WA from 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM. There is no cost; just bring your fishing gear and have fun! Registration will take place the morning of the event.

Saturday June 4th & Sunday June 5th – Anacortes Waterfront Festival
“The Anacortes Waterfront Festival is all about letting your inner sailor embrace life on the water”.

Located at the beautiful Cap Sante Marina (1019 Q Avenue in Anacortes, WA), the Waterfront Festival is a chance to take advantage of what makes Anacortes special!

Some of the events at the Anacortes Waterfront Festival include:
• Free Boat Rides: The first boat heads out at 10:00 AM on both Saturday and Sunday, with sign-ups beginning at 9:45 AM. Drop by the gazebo by the Marina office for details!
• Quick and Dirty Boat Building Demonstration: teams work on Saturday to build boats out of limited materials then compete by demonstrating floatability. Registration details are on the festival website!
• Milk Carton Derby: Awards will be given for Most Creative Derby Vessel, First Crew Across the Finish Line, Most Creative, and It Floats!
• Trail Tales: self-guided walking tours of the waterfront.
• Model Boat Show
• All Corvette Car Show

Bark in the Park
Bark in the Park is the best Anacortes event for dog lovers! Bring your dogs to Storvik Park on June 18th and give them a chance to walk in the parade with other dogs, participate in the peanut butter eating contest, watch the Agility Demonstration and more!

TrawlerFest 2015 is HERE in Anacortes! Get ready and geared up to check out the the impressive in-water selection of new and pre-owned cruising powerboats! If you are a cruising enthusiast, this event is not one to miss! TrawlerFest Anacortes is not just a boat show, it is where industry, education, and community come together in a relaxed, rendezvous-type atmosphere!

Mother’s Day Tea at Skagit Valley Senior Village– Event Starts: 2 pm Location: 400 Gilkey Road-Burlington, WA
This event will feature a variety tea samplings and a photo booth with costumes, props, backgrounds, and a professional photographer. This event is open to the community!

Sunday Morning Jazz at North Cove CoffeeEvent Starts: 10:30 am Location: 1130 S. Burlington Blvd-Burlington, WA

Join in on a morning full of Classic American Jazz music from the 40’s and 50’s performed by John Savage with Duane Melcher on the drums. Music includes sounds of Benny Goodman, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin. A special breakfast item will be included! This is a FREE event!

Mother’s Day Concert at Meerkerk Rhododendron Gardens Event Starts: 12 pm Location: 3531 Meerkerk Lane-Greenbank, WA

Harper Tasche will be performing his 22nd annual concert performing folk music using antique instruments and specializing in the harp. This event is $10 and FREE for ages 15 and under. Dogs are permitted on a leash!

Brunch and Musical at McIntyre Hall- Events Starts: 12:30 pm Location: 2501 E. College Way-Mt. Vernon, WA

The Mother’s Day brunch will kick off this event followed by a performance of “Shrek The Musical”. Brunch is $25 and the performance is $15-10

Take Mom on a Hike!

The State Parks and Recreation Commission is offering a FREE admission to all State Parks! The discover pass will not be required, but will be required to access lands managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Department of Natural Resources.

Kick Off to Fishing and Boating Season

Boating and fishing season is upon us here in Skagit County! This is an exciting time of the year as more and more outdoor community events kick off in our area!

Get the kids geared up for some fishing and head to Northern State Pond in Sedro-Woolley for the Kids Fishing Derby on Saturday May 2. Children 14 and under will be able to bring their own bait and gear and go crazy fishing! Gates open at 7 a.m. with fishing starting at 8 a.m. This event is sponsored by the Wildcate Steelhead Club, along with the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife, and General Administration Department of North Cascades Gateway Center. If you aren’t familiar with the area and need directions, here you go..Take HWY 20 East from Fruitdale Road, Left on Fruitdale approximately 1 mile on right hand side, look for signs along the way leading to the gate into the pond.

If you are a boater, the Swinomish Yacht Club in La Conner is holding their 40th Anniversary Opening Day Boat Parade also on Saturday May 2 at 3 p.m beginning at the North Basin. The theme for the parade is celebrating the 70’s and Jaws. If you are interested in participating in the parade, registration is Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the Clubhouse. Following the parade there will be a Potluck and an Awards Ceremony for prize winners. Music will be going all night long! This is event is located at 310 North 1st Street in La Conner.

Skagit Valley Tulip Festival 2015

It’s that time of year here in Skagit County where the tulip fields are ready to display the beauty of Spring!

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is a premiere destination in the Pacific Northwest for many near and far! The breathtaking display of the RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town show gardens are an explosion of color.

If you are interested in admiring these gorgeous gardens, visit the them soon. This year, tulips bloomed way earlier than expected and forced Tulip town to open last weekend. Yes, in mid March!

Events include wine-tasting, viewing of the tulip fields, music, street fairs, tours of local businesses that highlight local agricultural products, self-guided bicycle tours, a fly-in at the local airport, and more!

From the RoozenGardee Website: As of March 26, 2015 “We have tulips in bloom! Our tulip field at RoozenGaarde (Field 1) is now showing some brilliant and bright colors! Field 2 and Field 3 have also been lit up and are displaying outstanding colors. These fields are nearly in full bloom and we expect the next two weeks or so to be some of the most colorful days of the spring. Plan to be early this year!”

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is a great experience that includes beautiful photo opportunities as well as a place where you can order the best bulbs,cut flowers and mementos.

Skagit Valley Highland Games – July 14-15

Skagit Valley Highland Games – July 14 & July 15
Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon

This weekend, the 18th annual Skagit Valley Highland Games & Celtic Festival will be held at Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon, WA.

The Skagit Valley Highland Games features bagpiping and drumming competitions, bagpipe bands, fiddling, Highland dancing and of course the traditional Scottish athletics events.  For more information on each day’s schedule of events, visit the Celtic Arts Foundation Booth. The booth is  located by the main gate in the northwest area of the park. The gates to the games open at 8:00 a.m. and events will begin at 9:00 a.m.  Tickets for the Highland Games can be purchased at the gate.

While at the Skagit Valley Highland Games you can also enjoy  plenty of great fair food, Scottish clan arts and crafts vendors, Celtic music, a beer garden, and a Celtic animal farm!

The Skagit Valley Highland Games are for people of all ages and pets too ! Water for pets will be available in the Celtic Farm area.

The Skagit River Shakespeare Festival- June 4th- July 30th

The Shakespeare Festival, is a gathering of poets, actors and actresses, and poetry fans of all kinds! Shakespeare Northwest presents the Skagit River Shakespeare Festivals touring parks show, “Shakespeare’s Fools”.

The Skagit River Shakespeare Festival likes to have one show each year made accessible to all audiences throughout Skagit County, so they put on a touring performance that performs at local parks every Saturday in June.

“Shakespeare’s Fools” will give audiences a taste of several of Shakespeare’s plays, from all genres.  Shakespeare’s plays are still loved today. They are full of many fun and witty  characters that modern audiences can relate to, even 400 years later!

Admission to the plays are free while donations are accepted. Bring your favorite blanket or lawn chair!  The Shakespeare Festival is appropriate for all audiences too.

The Skagit River Poetry Festival – La Conner

The 7th Biennial Skagit River Poetry festival will be held May 17-20th, 2012, in La Conner, WA.

Opening night includes a Poet’s Table Dinner from 5:30- 7:30 p.m. for $75 and a Celtic themed night of poetry, music, and storytelling from 8-11 p.m. for $25.  Tickets can be purchased at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/224999 or at The Next Chapter Bookstore in La Conner.

The Skagit River Poetry Project’s mission is to bring poets into classrooms throughout Skagit County to promote literacy and an appreciation for language.  The Skagit River Poetry Project began in 1998,  as a result of a conversation between leaders from seven rural school districts in Skagit County, Washington. These leaders hoped to create a project that would support our high literacy standards with the arts.  From 1998 to the present, over 50 Skagit county teachers a year have hosted resident poets.

Have a Heart Run

Do you like to  help others? Do you like to run? Or even take a stroll with the family?  Then join the Have a Heart Run on May 12th, 2012!

This run benefits Community Action, which is a private, non-profit organization helping low-income families throughout Skagit County move towards self-sufficiency for over 30 years.

The timed 5k and 10k (certified) course is fairly flat and runs through beautiful Skagit Valley and  along parts of the Skagit River dikes and farmlands! The cost for pre-registration is $25, and $30 for the day of the race. The cost of registration includes the awards, random prizes for the pre-registered participants, and prizes for the person/team that raises the most donations!
